Guide: How to switch to Next-Gen connectors
This guide walks you through everything you need to switch to Next-Gen connectors smoothly, avoid compatibility issues, and get the most out of what Speckle offers.
Starting June 1st, 2025, Speckle’s Next-Gen connectors will become the default. This marks a big step forward in building a more unified, high-performance, and data-driven platform for AEC workflows.
Want to learn more about why we're making the switch? Read the announcement blog.
Step 1: Clean up before switching
To avoid conflicts, if you don’t need to use the legacy version at the moment, we strongly recommend uninstalling legacy connectors and Speckle Manager before installing Next-Gen connectors.
1. Open your Speckle Manager.

2. Uninstall all legacy connectors.

3. Uninstall Speckle Manager itself.

4. You're ready to go Next-Gen!
Step 2: Set up your workspace
If you're still using Personal projects, now is the best time to migrate them to a workspace! Please read more about Personal project limits starting June 1st here.
1. Create or join a workspace (it only takes a minute).
2. Move your existing projects into a workspace to keep them live and editable.
➡️ Projects left outside workspaces (personal projects) will be subject to the limits as of June 1st; No new personal projects, no new models in existing Personal projects, no new project collaborators in existing Personal projects, and 7-day version and comment history.
3. Invite your team to the workspace.

➡️ People in your workspace can be assigned either an Editor seat or a Viewer seat:
The Editor seat (which can be paid) permits users to contribute to a project by publishing and loading data using Speckle connectors. Members in an Editor seat can also create new projects in the workspace. Set the member’s role as Editor if they need to publish data.
The Viewer seat (always free) lets users view and comment on models in the web viewer.

4. Move Personal projects into your workspace or create new projects.

How to move Personal projects into a workspace?
1. Go to your Personal projects page.
2. For each project, click the Move button.
- Are you already inside a project? The Move button is easily accessible there, too.

3. Select an existing workspace or Create a new one if needed: give it a name, invite your team, and choose a plan—all in one go!

Step 3: Re-publish your legacy models
If you want to keep using models originally published via legacy connectors, here’s how to republish them using Next-Gen:
1. Install a Next-Gen connector you need.
Once the Next-Gen connector is installed, you should see it in your system programs and applications, along with a Speckle Desktop Service (this manages your accounts).

2. Open your application model. Click the Speckle button in your toolbar or use the "Speckle" command (for command-based apps) to open the Speckle connector.

3. Add your account by completing authorization in your web browser.

4. Click Publish.

5. Select your workspace and project.

6. Click Publish again!

Compatibility: Can legacy and Next-Gen connectors work together?
No. Next-Gen is a clean-slate rebuild—faster, smarter, and more reliable.
Models made with legacy connectors may not display correctly in Next-Gen.
For best results:
🔁 Re-publish models using a Next-Gen connector.
🔁 Don’t mix connector generations in collaborative workflows.
Don't see your workflow in Next-Gen?
If you're using legacy connectors to load native elements in Revit, Archicad, Civil 3D, and structural connectors, please reach out and explain what you're trying to achieve. The Next-Gen connectors will not support this functionality, but we are here to help you as best we can in your transition.
FAQ
How do I update the Next-gen connectors without Speckle Manager?
If a new version of Next-Gen connectors is available, you’ll see a little Update
button when you open it up in your host application. You can always go back to app.speckle.systems, to check for the latest version.
What's happening to Speckle Manager?
Speckle Manager is only used to install legacy connectors. If you must continue using legacy connectors, the Manager will be available here!
How do I uninstall the Next-Gen connectors?
Just head to your computer’s standard programs/applications list and uninstall like any other app.
How do I remove an account or change the default one without Speckle Manager?
Accounts can be removed or changed even without Speckle Manager. Whichever account you had selected last time (across devices) is your default for the next session.
1. Click your profile picture at the top open up your account manager.

2. Click to Switch your active account. Your last used account will be the default account.

3. You can add a new account, or click on the Trash icon on any current account to remove it.

What's happening to the Legacy connectors?
If you need to use Legacy, they will still be available for download here.
Where are the docs for Next-Gen connectors?
We're soon rolling out a new set of docs for Next-Gen connectors, workspaces, and the web app! They will be ready close to the June 1st transition date. In the meantime, we do document each connector workflow here, and if you have specific questions, please reach out to us here.
